Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Custom bronze plaques in New Jersey must conform to each cemetery's published regulations for monument dimensions, mounting configurations, and base heights. Lawn-maintenance memorial parks typically specify flush-mounted plaques with no raised edges; traditional cemetery sections may accommodate upright granite bases with mounted bronze plaques. NJ Bronze Plaques reviews the specific rules at your cemetery before designing your plaque, ensuring that every dimension and mounting detail is compliant before production begins.

Foundation Requirements

Bronze plaques mounted on granite bases in New Jersey require concrete foundations below the frost line — typically 12 to 24 inches depending on the cemetery's specification and the monument's height. Our installation crew prepares foundations to the receiving cemetery's stated depth, allows appropriate cure time, and then sets the granite base level before mounting the bronze plaque. We document the installation with photographs sent to your family on completion.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Bronze plaques are accepted across the full range of New Jersey's faith-affiliated cemeteries — Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Orthodox, and non-denominational institutions alike. Many faith cemeteries in Morris and Bergen counties have long traditions of specifying bronze for their flat-marker sections. Religious symbols appropriate to your family's tradition can be incorporated as cast-relief elements in the plaque design; we confirm the appropriateness of all imagery with the cemetery's office before production begins.

Bronze Plaque

A custom bronze plaque from NJ Bronze Plaques is fabricated to your exact specifications — size, lettering, border, symbol — rather than selected from a catalog. The bronze is cast in a mold produced from your approved design drawing, ensuring that every raised-relief letter, every decorative element, and every symbol appears exactly as you approved it. Standard plaques carry the name in raised-relief lettering with dates and an epitaph within a decorative border; custom plaques can incorporate portrait imagery, religious scenes, military branch emblems, and personal symbols — all rendered in the same raised-relief casting technique. The granite base that supports the plaque is available in black, gray, mahogany, and other American-made colors, selected to complement the bronze's warm tone. Over time, the bronze develops a natural patina that deepens its character without reducing the legibility of the raised-relief inscription.

Bronze Options

NJ Bronze Plaques sources American-made bronze alloy formulated specifically for outdoor memorial applications — dense enough to hold fine casting detail, resistant to New Jersey's outdoor exposure conditions, and consistent in color from commission to commission. Standard bronze finishes include natural brown, which ages to a warm traditional patina, and statuary bronze, which presents a slightly lighter, more golden initial appearance. The granite base material is drawn from the same American-made inventory we use across all NJ Bronze Plaques monuments. Most families pair black granite with bronze for maximum visual contrast; gray and mahogany granites are also popular choices that complement the metal's warmth.

Custom Design Process

Every custom bronze plaque at NJ Bronze Plaques begins with a design consultation in English, Russian, or Polish — at our Morris County showroom or by phone. We gather the information that shapes every decision: plaque dimensions, granite base style, lettering and border design, symbols to incorporate, and the cemetery's regulatory requirements. Our design team produces a scaled drawing showing every element for your approval before the casting mold is produced. No production step begins without your signed approval of the drawing.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

A custom bronze plaque at NJ Bronze Plaques passes through six stages from first call to installed memorial. One: the family consultation, where we document every design preference and the cemetery's regulatory requirements. Two: the scaled design drawing, produced for your approval before any casting mold is made. Three: casting mold fabrication — the approved design is translated into a precise pattern from which the bronze will be cast. Four: bronze casting and hand-finishing — the plaque is cast, cooled, and hand-finished by our artisans, sharpening every raised letter and relief element. Five: granite base preparation and plaque mounting — the finished bronze is set on the prepared American-made granite base, secured mechanically and with adhesive, and inspected. Six: delivery to the cemetery, foundation preparation by our crew, installation, leveling, and the installation photograph sent to your family.

“The custom bronze plaque NJ Bronze Plaques made for my sister's grave is exactly what our family needed. The raised lettering is beautiful and the rose border she would have loved. Knowing it was made in New Jersey by people who cared about the work made a difficult time a little easier.” — Diane, Essex County NJ
